Context
As part of the Farsight update for the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, Google introduced new visual modes that redefine how the device lives within the home.
Within this launch, our team developed the Minimal Mode faces for cooling, heating, and eco states.
The challenge
Minimal Mode required a visual language that felt calm and discreet while still expressing the system’s state clearly.
The interface needed to integrate naturally into the home environment, feel premium at a distance, and communicate information instantly.
The approach
We designed a restrained visual system built around line-based illustrations and controlled motion.
Each state—cooling, heating, and eco—was defined through a distinct visual behavior while maintaining a shared geometry and rhythm. Forms balance organic and geometric qualities, allowing the animations to feel alive yet precise.
Motion acts as an atmospheric gesture that communicates system activity while maintaining visual calm. Every element was refined to perform within a circular interface across varying viewing distances and lighting conditions.
Outcome
The Minimal Mode faces expand Farsight with a contemporary animated language that transforms the thermostat into an ambient object.
The system integrates naturally into the home, communicates with clarity, and reinforces the level of craft associated with the Google Home experience.
